So, I prepurchased the game and then found out my current laptop won't run it. I have a limited budget ($600 or less) and am unsure which laptop to buy. Which of the cards can handle it and perhaps SW:TOR.

I love my Civ games but am not a technical genius so was hoping you guys could help me out.

Thanks in advance!

Reform of 'PDMA' Guidelines and Establishment of Public Appeal Thread/Forum

$

Recent events in the Never Ending Stories forum have caused a community consensus in our forum to emerge, that the current PDMA process is insufficient to address the concerns many have about moderator behavior.

Moderators deserve to be respected, but there needs to be a better grievance resolution process in the event of mistakes and hurt feelings on behalf of the community. The current private appeals process is unnecessarily opaque and does not hold moderators sufficiently responsible for mistakes. If moderators are doing their jobs, they should have nothing to fear from explaining their actions where necessary.

As such, there needs to be a thread or sub-forum where complaints and concerns can be brought up publicly, and where moderators and community members can discuss the rationales for moderator actions as equals. This would be an exception to the current PDMA policy, under which no discussion of moderator actions is ever allowed.

This is clearly a foolish policy which does more to separate the moderators from the community which they moderate. The term 'moderator' means a guide, not a policeman, but lately some moderators seem to be embracing the latter mentality.

The Internet in general is a place for free discussion, and while the maintenance of an orderly forum with thousands of members means adherence to the rules is important, lack of accountability to the forum at large can cause the growth of an insular and authoritarian mentality among moderators that offends many of us forum members.

This thread is for public discussion on reforming the PDMA rules and increasing moderator accountability to the community.

Cannot get my mod to work, Newbie help!

So I have created a City State mod that adds several new city states to the game. I created a similar mod once before, but my hard drive crashed and I had to make a new one. I had no problem with it months ago.

But now, I have completed this mod, and it just will not work. I have gone through the text several times to spot any possible error, no luck. The mod shows up in the list for mods available to enable, but when I go to World Builder Scenario Editor, my new CS's do not appear. I have gone through the text and removed any strange characters (like ç or ä).

My question, besides how to fix this problem, is are there any special characters that, if used, would cause the mod to not work? I have tried to search around for a similar problem, but have only found someone discussing this topic once and he said he resolved the issue but did not state how.

Civilization Collection Series

$

0
Nereyus, Lshipp and I have been brainstorming ideas for a series of Civilization V mods, where each one is a collection of 4 or so civilizations, most of which have their idea coming from 'shattering' an existing Civilization into 4 sub-civilizations.
Each Shattered Civ collection would contain the 4 sub-civilizations, a scenario, and, possibly, a re-make of the entire Civ. For example:
Shattered Spain would consist of 5 Civilizations: Galicia, Castille, Aragon, Navarra, León, Spain and a scenario revolving around the Iberian Peninsula, where the player must unite Spain, fighting against the Moors and the other Spanish Kingdoms. Depending on scriptability, once the player has amassed enough land in Iberia, there may be a mechanic to turn into a United Spain.

Before we begin with this series, we'd like to know which collections sound most appealing to you, hence the poll above. Here is a more in-depth look at what each collection would entail:

1. Shattered Spain
- Castille, Galicia, Aragon, Navarra, León.
2. Shattered England
- Wessex, Mercia, Northumbria, Cornwall
3. Shattered Celts
- Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Mann
4. Shattered France
- Aquitaine, Normans, Francia, Britanny
5. Shattered Germany
- Prussia, Bohemia, Moravia, Bavaria
6. Shattered Sweden
- Swiþjod, Norway, Finnmark, Gotland
7. Shattered Russia
- Novgorod, Cumania, Kievan Rus, Muscovia
8. Shattered Rome
- Julii, Brutii, Scipii, SPQR
9. Shattered Greece
- Athens, Sparta, Corinth, Macedon
10. *Holy Orders
- Teutonic Order, Knights Hospitaller, Knights of Calatrava, Knights Templar
- Prussia, Rhodes, Andalusia, Jerusalem
11. Italian States
- Lombardy, The Papacy, Naples, Sicily
12. More Republics
- Genoa, Pisa, Venice (Redone), The Hansa
13. Eastern Europe
- Croatia, Hungary, Poland (Redone), Lithuania
14. Balkan States
- Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania
15. ACTDEBSEBIWBAITD
- Burgundy, Magyars, Wendish Empire, Luxembourg

*Holy Orders will have a unique mechanic - we plan to have them start the game without any settlers, and they are incapable of building settlers. What they do get is a Great Prophet and a sizable army. They must expand by conquest. Cities which follow their religion will not enter resistance or create unhappiness. Once they own a capital and 3 more cities, they will become a normal civ, capable of settling, and with new abilities - for example, the Teutonic Knights would become Prussia.

Ok, here it is, for me the Victory notification was anticlimactic. I mean I work my butt off to get a Domination Vic, and then a Culture Vic, putting in hours to win each, and then I get a weak notice, like no more than a memo, "Oh hey, u just won a whatever victory".

And I'm like really? Man I want a fricken ticker-tape parade, complete with fireworks marching bands and cotton candy with my civ's name put on a float at the front of the line of the Macy's Day Parade! When I win! :king::king::king:

Oh well, a man's gotta dream. :D Just mildly disappointed that's all..hehe. :(:eek::crazyeye:

Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 94
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the Ninety fourth game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of features in Civilization 5 Brave New World to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

Intentional use of the Science Overflow Bug is banned. Its use will result in your game being disqualified for results.

In this game, there is NO designated VC. All VCs are disabled but players results will be published by highest Score.

What does that mean? PLEASE READ!

Spoiler:
Game Score will determine who wins. Since no VCs are enabled the default is Time and in this game Max Turns has been set to 200 turns. This means the game will be a race to the highest score in 200 turns. Everyone plays the full 200 turns and saves after the 'Wait, just ... one ... more ... turn" Victory Screen screen pops up. Should you not have the highest score at the end of 200 turns it will result as a loss but you will get the screen regardless.

Since this hasn't been done in GotM before, Score determinations should be explained. This is how Score is calculated (according to Civilopedia here) in order of Least important to Most important:

- The number of tiles in your borders (this is the least important factor in victory)
- The number of cities in your empire
- Your population
- The number of techs you possess
- The number of "future techs" you possess
- The number of Wonders you have constructed (this is the most important factor in determining victory)

Each of these actions gives points towards your Game Score. National Wonders (Oxford, Nat'l Epic, Guilds, etc.) are not considered Wonders in the same way as Unique Wonders (Great Library, Stonehenge, etc.) for scoring. Strategies should be developed based on maximizing these methods for points. I recommend a test game or two if you are unfamiliar with Score calculations. You can see how each determinant is valued and gauge your strategies accordingly. At any time in a game, in the Diplomatic Overview Mini Screen you can hover the mouse over your Score to show where your points are coming from. This is also possible to view how the AI points are determined.

In this game you will play as the Romans and lead the Roman Empire to victory. It's a standard-sized map played at Prince difficulty and at standard pace. Highest Score is the designated VC for this game. You will have until October 15th to complete the game and submit.

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots, videos, or recorded/live-cast Let's Plays on other websites.

After Actions thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the one month submission period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note, you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends Wednesday, 15 October 2014.

The save will be available for download on 15 September 2014, midnight Central Daylight time (UTC -6:00) in the US.

[BNW] peaceful victory possible on King+ ?

$

I'm trying to move onto Emperor. I win on King almost every time, but I can only seem to do this through warmongering so I'm sure there are holes in my game. I usually don't literally win by domination - I conquer enough cities to cripple any opposition, paving the way for science/diplomatic victories. My problem is that almost all games seem to work out this way:

- settle 4-6 cities
- trade excess resources
- a few AIs will be friendly, ask for declaration of friendship, etc.
- gradually become out-teched, out-cultured, out-faithed, out-wondered, etc.
- around turn 100-150, one or more AI declares war on me. Sometimes I do have a weak army, but other times I've been #1 in soldiers and still been declared on. it seems inevitable. even friendly civs declare war on me. and if they don't declare, they denounce me.
- crush the AI since they're terrible at war. they're just awful. it's literally taking candy from a baby.
- repeat AI war declarations a few times. sometimes I even declare war on them since I learned it seems to be my only advantage.
- leapfrog into top score due to capturing enemy cities and capitals and all the wonders he built
- get major diplomatic penalties from warmongering, all civs either guarded or hostile, refuse to trade anything with me.
- cruise to science/diplomatic/domination victory despite all diplomatic avenues being closed off from being seen as a warmonger.

I guess I could try this same strategy at higher difficulty levels and see where it gets me, but I have my doubts. I think my peace-time strategy is lacking, but I don't know where or how to fix it. I always fall behind in tech, culture, wonders, religion, and the only way I found to catch up is by warmongering. This essentially prevents any future trading, research agreements, etc because all civs hate me.

My best guess is that I'm doing something subtle that pisses off AIs to make them keep declaring war on me. Surely there must be more than one way to win at Civ 5 than constant warmongering?

DLC and me ...

Hi,

My Wife and I are occasional CiV players and we love the game. But we have been away from it for some time because we just welcomed a little one to our family and were extremely busy, now that things are settling down we are finding time for CiV again.

Reason I am here now is because I was going through some things on the CiV section and realised there are a lot of DLCs. Map Packs/ CiVs etc. I want to know is, is it worth buying them all?

I had bought BNW a while back, but skipped over G&K. I see some CiVs that are seperate and some map packs.

What I am thinking? Well, I want to get all the CiVs simply because it gives ALOT of options to play with, but not sure about the map packs.

So worth spending the money?

Thanks,

Definitely getting the new expansion when it comes it, looks interesting.

New World Settings

I have a question about the new world settings - If I were to start a game with Barbarian World Off and Start As Minor Tribes Off then would the BUG menu settings for the new world civs still work?

I want to have the minor civs in new world but without having them in the old world at the start.

Best AI civs

We have a fairly well defined tier list for player civs. But I've been wondering -- What about AI civilizations? What leaders have you noticed as doing particularly well? For the reference, this is not a popularity/like vs. disliked AI's, just ones that are really good, no matter how nasty they may be to you.

In my games, I've noticed that Rome tends to be pretty successful.

[RD] Thoughts on an introductory presentation of Socrates

$

0
In a couple of weeks the second circle of the 'seminars' (they are less formal than that) i am organising/presenting for a few municipal libraries, will begin, and the scope of it is to build upon the previous circle (which had the Presocratics as its subject), present Plato and Socrates, and then (in its latter part) move on to the 19th/early 20th centuries and examine some reflections of notable writers on the same, or very related, issues.

I have, of course, created the outline, and finished the first speech of the starting presentation of this new circle, but i would like to ask if any people here who are familiar with the works of Plato (and the era), have any ideas to add, which i may well consider and build upon :)

So, here is the synopsis of the first presentation:

1) Historic timeline

-(shortly before) End of the Greek-Persian wars in Greece; victory of Athens in the river Eurymedon and the formation of the Delian league; influx of philosophers to Athens for the first time.

-Peace treaty of Nikias between Athens and Sparta, failure of the treaty later on and continuation of the war till the battle at Aigos Potamoi in 405 BC.

-Family of Plato, and of Socrates, Plato's parents descend from Solon the lawmaker, and possibly also the mythical Attic king Kodros. Socrates has a minor sculptor/stone cutter as a father, and a midwife as a mother.

-Conclusion of the Peloponnesian war, Socrates as a hoplite in three battles, the Trial of Socrates in 399 BC, and his death.

2) Socrates as a thinker/debater

-Socrates claims he is not creating knowledge, but - as his midwife mother - can help others deliver the knowledge they have within them, and note its strength or faults.

-Likeness and antithesis between Socrates and his views on the ability to have 'Knowledge", to the analogous ones by the Eleans (eg Parmenides and his claim that mortals can only have views (doksasies in the original greek), but not real knowledge of the truth.

-Later Platonic works, and The Republic. Analysis of the celebrated 'allegory of the cave', with its quite Eleatic hierarchy of knowledge, and the notions of forms and archetypes, along with a towering archetype of the "Agathon" (the term mostly means 'benevolent'). Tied to the second category above, for it is not purely Eleatic, but at the same time it is a departure from the claim that one can only hope to know that he knows nothing in reality.

3) Ties to the first circle

-Brief account of the first circle of the seminar, and its basis on concurrent math (eg Thales theorem, or Pythagoras, and then the Eleatics with their infinite series dialectic arguments by Zeno). Juxtaposition to Socrates, in dialogues such as the one 'On Science', which will be a recurrent theme in the first four weeks of this circle.

*

Ok... I would welcome any honest suggestion for making things more interesting, or to include some main part which i might have left out for the intro of intros in this circle... :D

Anyone know how to handle this, so that I can get CIV III Conquests Gold edition running again?

Python Problem: Classic Literature quest reward

I ran into a problem when I tried to edit Classic literature quest reward option 2: gain an ancient era tech.
I have never seen anyone actually accomplish this quest (11 libraries on huge) while still having unresearched ancient techs, so I tried to make it give a classical tech instead. I edited the text files to say classical and so on, but:

I made (in entrypoints/CvRandomEventInterface) the following changes, above=original, below modified:

So basically each ancient became classical, but no free tech screen shows up in my games when I choose reward 2, nor do I actually get anything. What is missing?

General question about crashing

$

Hi, all. A friend of mine created a Civ mod that seems to work fine but starts crashing when we do multiplayer (we use JdH's MP Mod), after about 70 turns. We've used a number of XML mods that sometimes seem to work fine, hardly any crashes, and some that result in crashes every turn after turn 30 or so (some of the Midwest mods fall into this category).

Any idea what separates a mod that seems stable from a mod that results in crashes after awhile? The one he created is not overly complex.

Thanks for any advice you can give!

Balance Question on building

$

A friend of mine and I are having some disagreement on whether the following Civ may be underpowered. Opins?

Special ability: Melee units start with Drill 1. Land Ranged units start with Barrage 1.

[Barracks Replacement]
+2 Happiness
+1 Culture
No maintenance

[Unit Replacement]
Something theoretically good but untested as of yet (getting Science from kills with a Frigate replacement).

Opins? Critique on Barracks is that it's not common to build them before turn 100 given how much else needs to get built and given you have wait until you research Bronze Working.

Will CivBE have a soundtrack that is up to par with Civ V? The epic soundtrack is one of Civ's strong points. I hope that CivBe won't just have generic Sci-Fi music...

Apotheosis (Mp patches and SP modmods)

$
0
0
Okay so I have a lot of plans for Apotheosis but first thing is first.

Here is the 'base' of Apotheosis which is just one basic change, I added a few minor things but really it is just one (or two) basic changes.

Major Change: Raider is now Mobility1/Flanking1/Drill1 instead of Commando

Minor Change: Harbor gives +1F/+1C, while SeaHaven does not, giving food equality post-Harbor. Lanun food-palace bonus still allows for Lanun to grow faster pre-Harbor, and with Pirate Coves, Lanun coastal will ALWAYS do better.

The water change is mainly not to nerf Lanun, but rather to bring the rest of the civs up a little. Why? Well, it is no big secret that spamming along the coast is one of the weakest strategies in FFH2. Lanun's coastal superiority is two levels of magnitude removed from this dilemma. Therefore in Multiplayer maps, having too much coast can be seen as an imbalance, merely because most civs cannot make much use of the oceans. In my opinion this is a very anti-flavor thing. Lanun are of course MASTERS of the Seas, but if only Lanun want to be there then this is a very lonely place indeed. Also, on random maps, which I believe most of us play on, to be stuck on a tiny peninsula would be, in real life terms rather excellent, but in gameplay terms would be rather unfortunate. Eventually I would like to try to get boats moving through forts, as I believe they can in vanilla BTS, for even more interesting Naval Strategies. As AI can allow for more use of enemy Naval use in SP, game-play reasons to increase the importance of Naval Combat for all races seems fair. And the only way for naval combat to ever truly matter is to increase the importance of controlling the seas ... something that only presently matters to the Lanun. I think it is certainly worth experimenting with, at the least.

And as far as Raider, I am just starting from the assumption that anything that gives out free Commando to the majority of a player's army is simply too powerful. There are of course arguments against that assumption, but this is where I am starting with. This is the main reason for this patch, and this philosophy may not be the guilding force for future development, but it will be one of the many core tenets of this mod.

Sincerely,
Tasunke von Papen
