[BNW] Does AI know how to counter a citadel-attack?

$

I usually play on Giant Earth Map TSL with 43 Civs + 20 CS. Europe there is really crowded with civs, leaving many civs with only one city for a long time. AI is regularly using citadel-culture-bombing with 1 tile distance to enemy AI capitals with the result that the culture-bombed civ will be conquered in the long run. One tile distance means that the citadel steals tiles from the inner ring of 6 tiles around the city. If the capital falls, the population is halved and many buildings including national wonders are destroyed, so loosing the capital usually means game over for the civ.

AI obviously knows how to use the citadel-culture-bomb to its advantage, but does AI also know how to counter such an attack?

Linguistics Mod Idea

Hi people, I have a Big Idea for Civilization 5 (I want it compatible in Vanilla (No DLCs and Expansions) and Complete Edition).

This idea are to add Languages and Linguistics in the game, like a mix of new (little) components, religion system and cultural ideas tree.

My idea (I need some help and references to mod this idea) are to make a simple mod, able to be extended by more experimented modders, about three principal ideas.

The First Princip : The Language depends to Religious Policies & Cultural Doctrines & Tourism (For Values of the language, with the influence of languages with others languages) First Example : The Traditionalist Arabia have a language and it change (significantly) if for example Free America are touristic dominant with Arabia. Second Example : If England language are isolated and France are isolated too, languages can be very different.

The Second Princip : The Language have a writing system (with it's own icon), a name, some rules like beliefs with Gods and Kings Expansion, with categories of rules and some linguists and lustrous linguists just for languages creation and expansion. (Just like Religion, but with links with others mecanics of the game and the language changes with time (Maybe with a Language Text Generator if experimented modders wants to add them to the original mod))

And Finally the Third Princip : Keep it simple and balanced, but continue to add some content and ideas to the mod !

If you need, I can try to translate it in French.

Ideas of Language System :

Names :
- Cyrillic/Slavic
- Greek
- Chinese
- Native American
- Hindi
- Arabic
- Turk
- Inuit
- Geogian
- Armenian
- Ethiopian
- Berber
- Celtic
- Germanic

Rules (Like Beliefs but with others bonus to religion) :
- (If a city are a majority of people to your language, them join you if you are at war with the civ them owns except capital)
(Others ideas are welcome)

But one thing are sure after the publication of the mod, I allow everyone to make it's own version and to expand the mod content if them are separated to the original mod.

So, Hi and see you soon !

Installation problem

Hi,

I recently decided to revisit Civ 2 and am trying to use it on Vista. I've had a look at the available patches but have a pretty specific problem.

When going through the install the setup tells me that I need to have Shockwave installed and offers me an "AutoFix" option, when it installs shockwave it finds the same problem saying that it is not installed and this time the "AutoFix" option is greyed out and when I select "OK" it just quits.

Any help would be great.

Could someone give me a copy of the BTS config.

Mine has gotten corrupted, so corrupted that if I delete it, it comes back as the corrupted version when I start the game back up.

Given that now Kickstarter and i suppose similar sites are a funding option, maybe Steph or others who in the past wanted to make such a game could try their luck in getting funds for it? :)

[BNW] Making changes to the DLL and combining the changes with other DLLs

$

Does anyone know how to do this?

I am trying to mod trade routes so that land trade routes have the same 2x multiplier that sea routes get.

I know that the relevant info is in CvTradeClasses.cpp and i have the file open, but how do i make a new DLL and combine it with whoward's DLL (Which im currently using)?

This is the relevant code :

Code:

int CvGameTrade::GetDomainModifierTimes100 (DomainTypes eDomain)
{
        if (eDomain == DOMAIN_SEA)
        {
                return 100;
        }
        else
        {
                return 0;
        }
}

I can easily change return 0 to return 100, but what's next?

[BTS] Current Map Limits?

I played for many years Civ4 BTS Giant Earth Map with around 35 civs on my old PC (WinXP, 2 GB). I always had problems that Civ4 GEM games became instable around renaissance era so that it often was impossible to continue the game.

When Civ5 was released, I moved to a new PC (Win7, 8GB) now usually playing Civ5 BNW Giant Earth Map.

It is now 4-5 years since I last played Civ4 BtS. The interesting question is : How much does Civ4 BtS profit from a new system and ressources (Win7, 8GB)? What are the limits for the biggest playable maps? Is it now possible to make a 180 x 360 tiles World Map and complete a game on the map?

Source of the Nile--questions about John Hanning Speke

$

John Hanning Speke was the explorer who named the lake as Victoria, in 1858. He was the captain of an expedition with the goal to discover exactly that source, after rumours that a large lake existed in that part of Africa, a little inland from the coast of the horn.
Speke himself was in service as a soldier since he was 17, and saw combat in the first Anglo-Sikh war. (the second, and last, Anglo-Sikh war took place 3 years after the end of the first, in 1849, and resulted to the complete annexation of the Punjab to the British East-India company). Speke also was serving during the Crimean War, after returning from a first (and failed, one where he nearly was killed by natives) exploration in Africa in 1854.

An interesting story (and one published in his lifetime) is that during the second exploration, which ended with the discovery of the source of the Nile, Speke chose unwisely to not worry about his tent being infested with small black beetles and go to sleep while they were crawling over him. This resulted in one of the beetles entering his ear, and refusing to leave, even after some attempt to drown it with melted butter. The beetle reacted by moving further inside the ear, and in the end trying to dig inside the drum. In effect Speke panicked, and using a knife attempted to remove the insect, but only managed to kill it, and its remains caused a very serious infection..

Speke returned to Africa for a third expedition, of which he was the head this time. Following the conclusion of it he claimed that he navigated the continuous waters of the Nile up to its already known parts in Sudan.

I would like to ask if the following details are correct (cause i only saw them in wiki, and that cannot be trusted by itself) :

1) the beetle's remains stayed in Speke's ear for months (namy 6 months? according to Speke himself).

2) Speke announced the discovery of the source of the Nile in London, in a speech to the Royal Geographical Society in 1859. This led to a break-up of his relations with the up to then more prominent explorer and head of that expedition, Sir Richard Francis Burton.

3) Sir Richard Francis Burton managed to have a debate organised in the Royal Geography Society, in September of 1864, with the premise that Speke had not continually navigated the rivers from lake Victoria, and thus the question was not in reality settled in a scientific manner. But Speke died a day before that debate would take place, when he was 37, in an apparent hunting accident where he fell on his own rifle and was shot just above the heart. I want to ask if any research of note exists on that event, apart from the concurrent examination which led to the conclusion it was indeed an accident (and not a suicide).

Thanks in advance :D

Female GP Names

Okay, so let's kick this off. While I'm still thinking about the best way of making this work, I think we can already start collecting female great people to include in this mod.

I know that this will be hard to impossible for some older civilizations, but at least for the modern civilizations I'd like to have at least one female great person per civilization in every category.

So if you have ideas, go ahead, it would save me a lot of research.

Only three biomes? Suggest some more!

I'm not disappointed with three initial biomes (desert, fertile, fungal) given the other variables in planet maps, but it would be good to see more in mods and DLC. Want to suggest some of your own favorite prospects?

I'll throw in mine:

-Rocky planet: mostly mountains, rocky plains, sparse scrub with perhaps some lush valleys to fight over.
-Iceworld: Glaciers, crevasses, ice monsters, oh my!
-Volcanic: Eruptions when you least expect them, releasing aliens from underground.
-Tectonicly Active: Earthquakes keep altering the environment right out from under you, perhaps pushing your continent or island around.

I think the two most desireable that I hope they make into DLC are these:
-Gas Giant: Floating cities of course! And lots of flying aliens and weird weather effects like storms and tornadoes.
-Water World: Underwater cities, anyone? Whale wars?

[BNW] The Power of Tradition Food Cargo Ships

$

This post helps show the power of food cargo ships sent to the capital in combination of Tradition. To prevent large duplication of existing tradition guides it assumes knowledge of them and will basically only touch where specific to food cargo routes.

This is also as a civ that has below average starting food (due to Forest bias) the Iroquois. Nor did I use religion to get any food boosts at all. (Tears of the Gods, Pagodas, Religious Community)

The basic strategy is mostly the same as standard tradition, except that you use the first 3 cargo routes as Food Cargo Ships. The timing for each cargo ship ideally is after the capital has the lighthouse but before its fishing work boats but the non-capital cities that are going to the origin must have a granary. (In addition, must be within range, in this particular case one of the cities didn't become in range until Optics, while the other 2 were from turn 1)

Attached are the screenshots of the beginning of the Midevil, Rean, Industrial, Modern, Atomic, and Information era.

In this case I went Freedom (via entering Modern era) and built Statute of Liberty and also completed Rationalism for additional bonuses from specialists, but during the Modern era I converted 1 of the food cargo ship routes to hammers and may switch another over before the game ends.

For other landmasses, if you start coastal on Contenants and place your other 3 cities on the coast (NOT behind an iceberg), this works just as well as it does on the landmass I picked.

Question about European trade companies/India

$

Hi,

I know there will be an event where a bunch of European soldiers will spawn at my cities. My question is which civs will have soldiers in my borders, what cities will be attacked and how many soldiers will be there?

I am already expecting the British (and their deadly Redcoats). Is there any good unit that can counter the Redcoats? India's production is so it's going to be hard to create enough units to stop them.

If you have won a UHV and have a higher score, earlier winning date, higher score or earlier winning date on another victory/speed combination, higher score or earlier winning date in another scenario than listed in this post (below), then post the following information: your save after the victory, civ, score, winning date, difficulty, game speed, scenario, SVN version (if using SVN); and, if you want, strategy and screenshots.

Virtual victory: If you have achieved all goals (everything is green on the victory screen), but you haven't won yet (because it's too early), then post two winning dates: a virtual and the real. The earliest victory will be considered by the virtual date. You have to post a save to prove it.

Note #1: Please, post a save immediately before victory. If you post a save after the victory the winning date in the OP would be that of the save.

Note #2: You can't use WorldBuilder.

Note #3: You can use only version 1.12 or SVN revision 781 or later.

Why does the US taxes foreign income?

$
0

Firstly, a disclaimer: this is not an anti-tax rant. I moved here voluntarily, work here and use local public services, so it's entirely fair that I pay US taxes over my US income and assets. I have no problem whatsoever with that.

But Uncle Sam also wants to tax my foreign income, for which I already paid foreign taxes, and which is under no protection of the US government. In other words, if someone was to steal (or some government to seize) the investments which generate that income for me, the US government would not help me at all. So this is not only double-taxation, it's also taxation that is not paying for any service rendered by the government.

I can kind of see the point of the US government requiring me to declare my foreign assets and income. It's a bit nosy, but serves a security purpose in keeping track of money laundering and etc. But actually taxing money that was earned and is kept abroad by a non-citizen? Seems bizarre to me.

So what do you folks think? Is there a rationale for it that I'm missing (other than pay it or go to jail)? Do other countries do this as well? Have any of you ever dealt with this?

Hi, in case anyone still uses this mod, just today, after a break of quite a long time, I booted up Planetfall once again, but found to my surprise that the green and red symbols for "planet health" (don't remember the actual name, courtesy of not having played for several months), did not appear on my flowering counter or in the datalinks (ie, in the description for Biology Lab).

Is there a reason for this happening?

Basically small (european) city/village.

I think this would be perfect: link (without the modern building).

Imitation of small city (european) would be perfect as well.

I don't know how Granary looks in game, but converted ART_DEF_BUILDING_GRANARY might do as well. Don't bother if it doesn't looks medieval though!

Thanks.
