I just reinstalled Col on a laptop where I finally got IV running a couple years ago. I was able to play a bit. Then on another startup it wanted to check for updates and loaded a patch/fix - after which it produces a Col Has Stopped Working window after "Continue" to go into turn 1. I uninstalled everything, reinstalled it out of the box, and where it worked before, it now gives the same failure window. I loaded the 101f patch hoping this woud fix it - Nope. Still bombs. What is even more frustrating than this is tha since Civ 3 I have never had a Civ version work right on its box install - even Civ 3 long ago demanded I go out and buy a new system to get the capability even though my current system at the time met the stated tech reqts. Same thing on this system and Civ 5. Do they ever get something that works as smoothly from the start on vanilla systems as do many other other game developers?
