Hi lads,
Been lurking around and I thought I'd get some input on how to improve my play here by asking direct questions.
I've just moved to Emperor at the moment and I'm still grasping the game in terms of making each building, research and turn count.
Focusing on playing simple maps (note: pangaea) for starters, and trying my hand on Alex.
I always enjoy the early parts of the game, and I have reached a stage where I know my priorities pre-100 turn, and getting the right building, unit count and science gain.
It's often after the first or two DoWs that I start losing track of my turn count positioning my army and getting the right building in.
*I'll post a screen shot or save game of one situation perhaps I can get some info.
I'm on this game, Pangaea, Emperor, Standard Speed, Alex, and I'm at about T180 I believe.
All was well up to T100. I had my standard tradition opener, 3 city by T60 with 5 CBs, DoWed Rome and got his capital, and now I am facing the behemoth task of controlling Monte who has just snowballed out of control.
I've got InfoAddict on so by the count now, he has about 19 cities, and I have about 8. I recently DoWed Hiawatha who was just at my south, and that was where I started wasting so so many turns positioning my armies (I knew it was a rough terrain so I actually had workers put some roads towards ally city states next to Hiawatha to reduce movement time)
I'm already wearing down Onandaga, about to take it down, but I'm already at T180 or possibly even more. I'm leading in Science, getting about 500 beakers per turn, just got my artillery because he's got the great wall and kremlin built.
Problem now is handling Monte who is just taking over city states and having much stronger army than me. The other few civ left, Darius and Egypt basically have nothing in their tank. I managed to bribe Egypt to DoW Monte doubt it'll make much of a difference.
I suppose my dilemma here is this, knowing that Iro had Great Wall already built early in the game, should I have just hold on the DoW and really pump up more units, or should I have avoided doing that altogether and go straight for diplomatic/science victory. I waste so much time positioning my gatling guns out of their two tile fire zone, or even trying to lure his units out to my firing zone that i did not realize I wasted a good 10-20 turns just moving units around. With Onandaga surrounded by 3 other of his cities, should I have slowly creep my way into it instead of Gung-Ho placing units around the city and hoping that my gatling or at that time cannon will do enough damage within 2-3 turns to take down.
