I'm one of those who thinks that including any of the American Indian tribes is suspect. I just don't think any tribe that had not even discovered the wheel could properly qualify as a civilization under any reasonable definition. But the Shoshone? Even among Indian tribes they are a footnote. I actually grew up in Idaho Falls, just to the north of the Fort Hall reservation, and I didn't know anything about the Shoshone other than they were there (along with the Bannock tribe, btw).
And their great contribution to civilization is they allowed a road to be built through their territory? Seriously, even if you have to include another Indian tribe, the Mohawks, Apache, Sioux, almost any tribe would be more justifiable. Even in Idaho the Nez Perce tribe had a greater impact, and you've probably never even heard of them.
