"Chivalry" expectations

I wish the title was better, but bear with me...

So this weekend I was visiting my family and I went out to watch UFC at Hooters and invited my little brother to come join me (he's 18, I'm 22). He had plans with his girlfriend already, but they stopped by for a bit and I got to meet her. When they got there I had already been there for about an hour watching the prelim fights, eating wings, etc.
So they walk in and my brother pulls out a chair for her first, and then proceeds to sit down himself. As if this was a totally normal course of events, which got me thinking do people actually still do that?:crazyeye:
I have never in my life even considered the idea of pulling out a chair for a girl so she could sit down, nor do I open the car door for her, etc. An ex-girlfriend of mine used to complain that I never opened the door for her when she rode in my car, I thought this was absurd and treated her like she was joking. Perhaps she wasn't:eek::confused:

Are these sort of things normal? Am I expected to do them? Am I the only one who thinks that they sound completely absurd?

Just to be clear I'm not some "oaf" I hold doors for people if I happen to reach them first, I say please and thank you, I follow general etiquette, etc.
