Does anyone else find barbarians extremely hard to deal with? I love the idea of having them in the game, as they were obviously an important part of the combat history, especially in the early eras. But each time I include them all I seem to do is spend time defending against them, and losing ground on other civilizations in the process. I find I have to build archers really early to have a chance of keeping them down, therefore hindering my building of useful buildings and wonders. The last game I played I was sending my scout out scouting and he suddenly was boxed in by barbarians. He had no chance and was duly killed. Shortly afterwards I had a settler and worker attacked and killed by them. It just seems every corner I go round there is a barbarian waiting to pounce on me. Or they appear and make their way ominously towards my cities, meaning I have to concentrate any units I have on that specific area. The frustration they cause me leads me to leave them out of my games, which is a shame as I really do like the concept of them roaming around causing trouble. I just cannot seem to handle them properly. I realise this is probably down to my general game-play weaknesses, although I am at a loss as how to improve against them. Many a game I have started with them included and just got bogged down beating them back. I would absolutely dread playing a game with raging barbs and find it astonishing that others can handle such an onslaught. Does anyone else leave them out because they are hard to handle?
