upgrading workers

messing around with my own personal epic conquests mod. Instead of workers automatically upgrading their appearance when they hit a new era, is it possible/playable to have an ancient/medieval worker upgraded manually to a modern worker just like any other unit has to be upgraded? Will it be problematic for the AI? Does anyone know?
