What is progress?

Medicine improves. Technology advances. Wondrous things are invented. Cities are erected. People organize. Governments topple and new ones take their place. Markets are restructured. New ideas take root.

But what has humanity, as a whole and over multiple generations, actually changed about itself? Have we ever actually seen the world in a fundamentally different way than those before us?
