How do I highlight a route on the map?

I am not sure where to start looking, so was hoping someone could point me in the right direction on how to do this.

I was hoping to write some code that highlights (i.e. red, green) a specific route or area on the map when a player clicks on a notification icon or some similar icon.

Anyone know of some code I can study or provide pointers?
