I'm normally not much of a navy guy, I usually play continents maps, so I'll do most of my fighting on land. But in my latest game, I was struck on a small continent with India who attacked me in the early medieval which he ended up regretting. :p Catherine was sitting on a small continent for herself besides us seperated by only a small strait of water, doing nothing but building up her army, and sure enough not long after she DoW'ed me (even though we had a DoF), so I decided to build a handful of Frigates and some privateers Privateers to defend those waters.
At this point we were well into Renaissance and Catherine had a literal army of Cossacks, but she failed to make landfall on my continent, so they were making pretty easy targets for my Frigates who soon started to earn good experience. I picked Bombardment I, Bombardment II and then the Range promotion in order to be able to attack her cities comfortably without being in firing range.
I was having a real hard time making landfall on her continent however, because her land forces outnumbered mine by many times, so I kept attacking her cities, razing them if possible, or letting her conquer them, only to take them again. This went on well into Industrial until I decided to beeline Electronics and upgrade my Frigats to Battleships. Now I have 5 Battleships with a range of 4 and they recently got the Logistics promotion to attack twice each turn.
Poor Catherine has been reduced to a couple of minor cities on a remote island, pretty much all of her main cities were within 4 tiles of some coastline and those Battleships completely obliterated her. That will teach her not to backstab a friend.
