Hey folks and merry xmas!
I have serious problems how to develop with the celts (just stepped to immortal diff, haven't won a game yet, but am improving, can totally feel the step up pressure from emperor).
My issue is that am not sure how to tech with them. I know I should get at least 1 luxury early on so I can trade with AI, but I also need archers or PWs in order to defend / discourage early DoW's (and fend off barbs).
Rushing to found a religion (by dropping couple cities with forest tiles nearby and preferable some resources too) works to a point, but am falling behind in economy and science. If I ignore this aspect I feel like am not playing them right. Since am playing on epic speed things are quite different from standard, the AI's seem to have no problem in spamming units or totally eclipsing me in tech (especially if I get an inland start with no river and no mining resources, but calendar luxuries in forest or jungle) as I won't have good money early on and nothing to trade for quite a while.
My best game got me to near industrial era, but at that point I only managed to get out 3 cities (was a bad starting location, was between korea ethiopia japan and polynesia which all spread early on cutting me off) no sea / ocean access unless I went miles away with no possible way of connecting to my capital and having other civs in way. I managed to stay friendly while all 4 were fighting eachother but even rotating my spy and going tall (thanksfuly food tiles were pretty good) I couldn't catch up to make a push or get a city or more from a neighbour without endangering my own existance lol :)
I was sort of forced to accept open borders from all of them since they were fighting eachother and I was in middle, and declining would most likely make me the target hehe :)
Trading wise they got access to best spots while I was the happy owner of truffles and ivory. Soon japan and korea start to steal some of my land with GG citadels near some of my luxuries and I can't DoW them as they will most likely crush me :)
Anyway, am looking for some good tips on starts with celts, I know honor is an option with them and PWs backed by archers, but when enemy cities are sort of covered by jungle is very hard to make a push (not to mention the lack of line of sight for archers, and getting them in melee range of enemy units to fire is suicidal at best haha!).
Thanks!
